Some stories are difficult to tell because they reveal the very best and very worst of humanity at the same time. Meisie’s story is one of them.
I first met Meisie during an outreach visit in a local community. She was a gentle dog who should have known only kindness, yet she had become the victim of a brutal act of cruelty. She was kicked with such force that she suffered a broken leg and lost several teeth.
Sadly, Meisie was not the only victim in the area. Investigations into the alleged perpetrator are ongoing, and we continue to pursue the matter.
She was in pain, frightened and uncertain of the people around her. Cases like these are a stark reminder of the impact violence has on animals. The physical injuries can often be treated, but rebuilding confidence and trust can take much longer.
Meisie was admitted to our clinic at KAWS, where she received the veterinary care she urgently needed. Her recovery did not end there. Once her condition had stabilised, she began working with our dedicated physiotherapy team. The road ahead would be challenging, requiring patience, determination and consistent treatment.
Progress came slowly. There were good days and difficult days. Every step forward, however small, mattered. Through weeks of rehabilitation, Meisie gradually began to regain strength and mobility in her injured leg.
What stood out throughout her recovery was her willingness to keep trying. Despite everything she had endured, she continued to respond to gentle handling and patient encouragement. Time and again, she demonstrated a resilience that never fails to inspire those who work with animals.
Even after returning home, Meisie’s treatment continued. Regular physiotherapy sessions remained an important part of her rehabilitation, helping her regain as much normal function as possible. Each visit brought further improvements and renewed hope.
Today, Meisie’s story is not defined by the cruelty she experienced, but by the compassion that followed. It is a story of veterinary care, rehabilitation, perseverance and the many people who refused to give up on her.
While we continue to seek accountability for what happened to Meisie, her recovery serves as a powerful reminder of why animal welfare matters. Every animal deserves to live free from fear and suffering. When that right is taken away, it is our responsibility to step in, to advocate, and to give them the opportunity to heal.
Meisie was given that opportunity. Her journey back from pain and uncertainty has been remarkable, and her story stands as a testament to the difference that compassion can make.
