The Adoption Process

Find Your Match

Our staff will guide you through the process and share what they know about the animal to help ensure the best possible match for both you and your new companion.

Step 1

Meet & Greet

For dog adoptions, any existing dogs and/or children in the household will need to come to KAWS to meet the adoptable dog, in a controlled environment, to ensure compatibility.

Step 2

Fill in the Application Form

Once you’ve chosen your new family member, complete the application form. KAWS will arrange a home check to ensure your home is a safe and suitable match.

Step 3

Become a Member

Your membership helps support the vital work we do for animals in need, and for that we are truly grateful.

Why should I adopt from KAWS instead of buying a pet?

By adopting, you are giving a second chance to an animal in need, while helping to reduce overpopulation, neglect and abuse. Adoption also frees up space at the shelter so we can rescue more animals from the Knysna community.

Come meet our animals at KAWS between 9:00 and 16:00 on weekdays, or 9:00 and 11:00 on Saturdays. Fill in an application form in our office, or on our website. We’ll then get in touch to arrange a homecheck. This ensures that each animal is placed in a safe, loving and suitable forever home.

Yes. All animals adopted from KAWS are sterilised (age and health permitting), vaccinated, dewormed, and treated for parasites. This helps prevent unwanted litters and promotes long-term health.

Our team will help match you with an animal based on your lifestyle, living environment, and experience with pets. We encourage adopters to spend time with animals at the shelter to find the best fit.

Yes, provided you have written permission from your landlord.

Responsible pet ownership includes ensuring that pets get sufficient exercise and enrichment, according to their individual needs and environment.

We understand that adjustments can take time and circumstances change. If challenges arise, KAWS is available to offer guidance and support. If an adoption truly cannot continue, the animal must be returned to KAWS.
