2025 New Year’s Eve

On New Year’s Eve, Knysna Animal Welfare conducted a targeted community outreach in Nekkies Oupad, Knysna, in response to ongoing concerns around fireworks and their impact on dogs in rural communities.

Fireworks are a well-known cause of extreme stress, fear, and panic in animals. In areas where dogs are often confined, chained, or without secure shelter, the effects can be especially severe. This outreach aimed to provide preventative care and calming support to help dogs cope during a particularly distressing time of year.

During the outreach, dogs received deworming and deflea treatments to address common parasite-related health issues and improve overall wellbeing. These treatments form part of essential preventative care, helping to reduce discomfort, illness, and longer-term veterinary problems.

In addition, calming aids were distributed to dogs showing signs of anxiety or stress. These were provided to help reduce fear responses associated with loud noises and environmental pressure, particularly during the New Year’s Eve fireworks period.

As part of this outreach, Simparica was also handed out to a limited number of dogs at the request of a sponsor. These doses were allocated responsibly and used where appropriate, in line with the sponsor’s request and the dogs’ needs.

This New Year’s Eve outreach highlights the importance of proactive, compassionate animal welfare intervention, especially during high-risk periods such as fireworks season. By providing both physical healthcare and emotional support, Knysna Animal Welfare continues to work towards healthier dogs, reduced stress-related behaviour, and stronger relationships within the community.

Knysna Animal Welfare thanks its supporters and sponsors for making this outreach possible and for helping us respond where the need is greatest.
